Perhaps no artwork captures the ethos behind Custom Wire Products better than René Magritte’s The Son of Man. The Belgian surrealist once explained his famous painting by saying:
"...You have the apparent face, the apple, hiding the visible but hidden, the face of the person. It's something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing... There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us." It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply with Jeffrey Lawrence, founder of Custom Wire Products.
“Most people know me as a ‘wire guy,’ but my roots are actually in the electroplating industry,” Lawrence says. Early in his career, he held a minority stake in Elkem, Inc., an electroplating services provider. “As a young man, I operated electroplating equipment built by my grandfather, Herbert Kent. That’s where it all began.”
But despite the precision and care Elkem brought to its process, Lawrence found himself constantly frustrated by a common industry misconception. “Too often, customers would blame the plating—‘the apple’—without ever investigating the quality of the substrate—‘the face,’” he explains. “We delivered world-class electroplating, but the raw materials we received were frequently subpar. As a service provider, Elkem didn’t manufacture wire, so we couldn’t control what came in the door. That lack of control made excellence elusive.”
Over time, Lawrence’s mastery of electrochemical processing evolved into a broader passion for metallurgy. After nearly 15 years in the field, one truth became crystal clear: to deliver the highest-quality product, he needed to control what had always been uncontrollable.
That realization gave birth to Custom Wire Products.
